Pop-Up Book Shop
Run your own cosy, bookish pop‑up in your local community
We’re looking for enthusiastic, community‑minded volunteers to run The Book Lover Club Pop‑Up Bookshops in their local area. This is a joyful opportunity for someone who loves books, enjoys chatting with people, and wants hands‑on experience running a small, magical bookish event.
This is a volunteer role, but hosts keep 100% of the profit after selling fees - making it a rewarding, low‑risk way to share your love of reading while building something special in your community.
What the Role Involves
As a Pop‑Up Bookshop Host, you’ll:
- Find and secure a local venue (e.g., indie café, bar, restaurant, community space).
- Choose the books you want to stock and place your order with The Book Lover Club
- Purchase your stock at a 30% discount
- Sell books at full retail price
- Keep 100% of the profit after Shopify + card fees
- Set up and run your pop‑up bookshop using our branding and equipment
- Chat with customers, recommend books, and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere
- Keep any leftover stock (no refunds) — you can save it for future events or sell it independently
This is your chance to run a mini bookshop for a day, with support, branding, and guidance behind you.
What You’ll Receive
We want you to feel confident, supported, and excited. As a host, you’ll receive:
Practical Support
- Guidance on choosing and approaching a venue
- A set of 10 ready‑to‑post Instagram graphics to promote your event
- Use of our pop‑up market stall, including all merchandising equipment: Table display items, Book stands, Signage, Decorative elements, Payment signage
- In‑person support from Zoe
- Advice on book selection, pricing, and display
- A simple “How to Run Your Pop‑Up” guide
Financial Structure
- Purchase stock at a 30% discount
- Sell books at full retail price
- Keep 100% of the profit after selling fees
- Keep all leftover stock (no refunds)
Optional Add‑On: Second‑Hand Stock
Hosts can choose to add a bulk box of second‑hand books to their stall:
- 50 books for £75
- A mix of romance, fantasy, YA, and dystopian titles
- Supplied in bulk — titles cannot be chosen
- Perfect for a bargain table (£3 per book or 2 for £5)
- Non‑refundable
This is a fun, low‑cost way to boost your stock and increase sales without investing in lots of new books.
What You’ll Need
- A love of books and community
- Confidence chatting with customers
- The ability to organise a small event
- A bookish social media presence or willingness to start one e.g., @BookLoverClub_[YourTown]or your existing bookish handle
- A suitable venue in your local area
- The ability to pay for your discounted stock upfront
- Willingness to care for and return any borrowed equipment
No retail experience required, just enthusiasm and a friendly smile.
Venue Requirements
Hosts are responsible for securing a free venue. Most independent cafés and bars are happy to host at no cost because the pop‑up brings in customers and creates a vibrant atmosphere. Venue hire fees are not covered by The Book Lover Club.
Time Commitment
- One pop‑up event (usually 2–4 hours)
- Time to organise the venue and promote the event
- Optional: planning future pop‑ups if you enjoy it
This role is flexible and designed to fit around your life.
Who This Is Perfect For
- A book lover who wants to dip their toes into bookselling
- Someone who enjoys hosting, chatting, and creating cosy experiences
- A bookstagrammer or booktokker wanting to expand into real‑world events
- Anyone dreaming of running a bookshop one day
- A community‑minded person who loves supporting local venues
How Profit Works (Clear & Fair)
Here’s a realistic example using a £10 book:
Book Retail Price: £10
Host Buys at 30% Off: £7
Gross Profit: £3
Selling Fees (Typical)
- Shopify fee: ~£0.20
- Card processing fee: ~1.75% (≈ £0.18)
- Total fees: ≈ £0.38
Host’s Net Profit
£3.00 – £0.38 = £2.62 profit per book
Host Keeps: 100% of that £2.62
This is a strong margin, especially with:
- No rent
- No utilities
- No business rates
- No long‑term commitment
- No branding costs
- No equipment costs
- No risk of unsold stock (you keep it for future events)
It mirrors real indie bookseller margins, but with far less risk and far more support.
Extra Perks
Host Spotlight Programme
Every host is eligible for a feature on our Instagram and website, including:
- A spotlight post
- Photos from your pop‑up
- A shout‑out to your bookish social accounts
- A highlight in our monthly newsletter
Host Community Group
All hosts are invited to join our cosy WhatsApp/online group where you can:
- Ask questions
- Share photos
- Celebrate wins
- Swap tips
- Feel supported
How to Apply
Send us a message specifying the role that you are interested in and sharing:
- Your location
- Why you’d love to run a pop‑up bookshop
- Your bookish social media handles (or confirmation you’re happy to start one)
- Any ideas you have for your event
- Your availability
We’ll help you get everything set up so you can bring a little bookish magic to your community.
Why These Opportunities Are Volunteer or Self‑Employed
Our community roles are designed to be flexible, low‑pressure, and rooted in creativity and connection. Because of this, they are not traditional employment positions.
Some opportunities are offered on a self‑employed basis, with a small retainer or commission for the work someone chooses to take on. Others are volunteer‑led, where people get involved simply because they love books, community, and creating cosy spaces for others. In some cases, volunteers can earn money through independent book sales, where they buy stock at a discount and keep the profit after fees.
The Book Lover Club may offer perks or benefits as a thank‑you for a volunteer’s commitment, but these are not payment for time and do not create an employment relationship.
This approach keeps everything flexible, empowering, and community‑driven, while staying fully aligned with UK guidance on volunteering and self‑employment.
